In Sanskrit, Rishikesh is named after lord Vishnu, who appeared as a god Hrishikesh to answer a plea for penance by a saint 'Rabhiya Rishi'. This holy town Rishikesh is considered to be a part of the legendary 'Kedarkhand' (the present day Garhwal). The old story tellers/people believe that Lord Rama did penance here for killing Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. Another legend says that this area is also known as Agni Tirtha, where Lord Agni prayed for the expiation of his sins after cursed by angry Lord Shiva. It is believed that several yogis and sages lived and practised penance here.
