Kedarnath is one of the sacred place in chardham yatra which is situated in Rudraprayag district of Garhwal region in Uttarakhand.Kedarnath is considered to be one of the most remote site of chardham yatra, but due to such a remote area kedarnath get so much importance because of lord shiva temple which is considered to be one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
Kedarnath Temple is situated in magnificent Himalayan range which is considered to be Kedarnath range by the people, at an altitude of 3,580 m(11,755 ft) above sea level.Due to by breathtaking snow-capped peaks and ahead of river Mandakini.This beautiful ambiance around the temple bring feeling of spirituality. This feeling of quite peace on heaven causes so many Rishi/ Sadhu to come here for meditation.There are around 200 shrines which are dedicated to Lord Shiva in the area itself shows the importance of this place.
As per legends there is an interesting Story behind the Town and its Temple. According to the Puranas, the Pandava brothers during the Mahabharatha War, they killed their own cousins Kauravas in the battle of Kurukshetra war so to get rid themselves of this sin, the Pandavas undertook a pilgrimage to Kedarnath to please Lord Shiva.Earlier the temple was built by Pandavas and Present temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in 8th century. Just Behind the temple you will seen samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya.
